The symbolism of the River also has a parallel of “Rain” in Kud’s route. There is a notable inspiration however, as we later learn in Mio’s route that the origin of this river imagery stems from a love poem about memory and perception. In the context of Yuiko’s route, I take it to mean “if you can keep the flow of water going, you can continue to ride it” or something of that sort.Īs Mio says, the definition of ‘river’ in the context of Mio’s route is much different than it is in Yuiko’s route. Nishizono “The way we define the world varies depending on one’s feelings, memories, and experiences.” Nishizono “While others may be reminescent of their beloved ones separated from them.” Nishizono “Even if people see the same scenery, some will think it’s just a river…” Nishizono “Sutokuin, for example, wrote one relating his feelings to the river current.” Nishizono “About the Hyakunin Isshu containing a number of love-related poems.” We had brought up too many topics to be sure. Nishizono “…Do you remember the conversation we had at the riverside?” “River” shows up in one of the dream sequences, and it shows up in Mio’s route. She at one point says “If it could manage to ride on this river wind, it might be able to go any distance.” There are also several other motifs that couple with this. It almost erases her, washing her away from the world. It constantly separates her from anyone else, in more ways than physical. With how it shows up, it could be said that the rain is a representation of Yuiko’s isolation. I’ve never liked rain much in the first place. It rained for the rest of the day, so our practice was cancelled. …And then I felt a drop of water on my nose.Īnd strangely enough, this segment is half narrated by Yuiko, as if she were the teller of this story reflecting upon the past…Īnyway, rain shows up multiple times, such as when Riki realizes no one else can hear Yuiko’s broadcasts:
– Not knowing what that was, I wished for it. Kurugaya “…we feel the same way about each other.” – And thus, I ended up wishing for what came after. – I wanted to know what it meant to like, and to love Kurugaya “I was happy to hear your words.” – I wanted to know more and more about it. – It was a string untied little by little. Kurugaya “…Not even what it is to be in love, or to like someone.” Kurugaya “I didn’t know what was fun and what was boring.” Kurugaya “Before I met you guys, I didn’t even realize how unfortunate I was.” Kurugaya: “I think my tragedy is that I’ve never had this feeling before.” From the point where the two became romantically involved, the rain fell, and it serves as a device to isolate Riki (or maybe even Yuiko) from everyone else. That isn’t to say the connection is positive however rain is often used to frame the strange happenings of the world. For example, rain appears to be representative of the feelings Yuiko holds. ~Rain and Snow~įirst, we should establish the common symbolism of the route. No, I want to talk about the thing everyone ignores: Narrative Depth. I’m not interested in the pure summation and recapping of events. That’s an abridged summary, but we all know what happens in the route. Yuiko deals with the bullies, Riki sees it all and is like “wow she’s cool I like her can i date tho?” and Kyousuke shows up to be like “lol u crazy she’ll end the world if you try” and Riki is like “good enough” and confesses to Yuiko. And the bullies won’t like her when she gets angry. Now that they’ve started going for her friends, Yuiko is angry. Yuiko is observant however and knew these bullies existed… She just didn’t care that they were after her. Riki, our protagonist, notices that some bullies are out to get Yuiko, so he discreetly decides to take Yuiko’s problems upon himself.
In her dying moments, she wished to experience the feelings that normal people feel, and with the help of many other wishes, the dreamer world of Little Busters came into existence. Yuiko’s route tells us a story about a girl who struggled to connect with anyone in life. This article is written for those who know the secret of the world.
